Comments

Comments are the little notes that people leave on your website. At the end of posts there is a space for people to leave these comments. The comments are allowed by default, but can be turned off on a post-by-post basis or turned off permanently. As well as comments there are trackbacks. When someone at another blog writes about a post on your site and puts a link to your post on their site, then your site receives a small message from their site telling your site that it has linked to your site. Your site then includes an excerpt of their post, usually the area directly surrounding the link to your site, in the comments area at the end of the post on your site.

The main comments page lists all of the comments that have been left on the site. Comments are subject to a moderation process, but comments that show up on the initial Comments Management page will be shown on the website.

The search box at the top of the page allows the comments to be searched to find those hard-to-find posts.

Below the search box are two links to two different viewing modes.

By default the first view that is seen is the View Mode, this displays all the comments with links to actions for each comment. The other option Mass Edit Mode puts the comments in a list with checkmarks next to the comments. This is useful for performing an action on a whole lot of posts at the same time.

The comments display the name of the author of the comment and their website address. These two fields are entered by them on the blog. An IP address is included to allow troublesome IP address which perhaps spam a lot, to be blacklisted. The content of the post is then shown below.

The date of the comment is followed by some links to actions that can be performed on the comment. Edit allows the comment to be edited. This is usually not needed and is most useful for making Editor’s comments on comments where necessary. The details of the comment editing area are left for another post.

The Delete button will delete the comment. Click OK in the popup box to delete the comment or Cancel to return to editing the comment without deleting it. Unapprove will put the comment back in the moderation list. Spam will mark the comment as spam and remove it from the site. The final link links back to the post that the comment was made on.
