Categories
The Manage Categories page allows categories to be added and deleted, and the names and descriptions of existing categories to be changed and updated.
Click on Manage->Categories to access the category management page.
The list of current categories is presented.
The ID column shows the ID that is assigned to the category in the database.
The Name column shows the name of the category. The categories are arranged in alphabetical and heirarchical order. Subcategories are listed below their parent categories and are prefixed with a “—” for a direct subcategory. Further subcategories follow the same order, and a subsubcategory would be prefixed with “——”. And so on and so forth.
By example:
cat1
-subcat1 of cat1
–subsubcat1 cat1 (subcategory of subcat1)
The Description is a short description of the kinds of posts that are found in that category. This is optional and is left blank if the categories are added in the Categories box on the post writing page.
The Posts column shows how many posts are in the that category. The post count is the direct count of how many posts are in that category and does not include how many posts are in subcategories.
The Action column includes two links.
The Edit link allows the description and name of a particular category to be changed. Because the categories are arranged according to a their ID numbers in the database, even after changing the name of a category, all the posts that were in that category will still be in that category.
The Delete link will delete the category and move all the posts that were under that category to the category marked with Default.
Below the listing of categories is a short note on what happens when a category is deleted. Included is a link to the “category to tag converter”. Tags are a new addition to Wordpress, but categories were often used in the same manner because it was just more convenient to do so. The category to tag converter allows category names to be changed into tags. Categories are deleted and their name will be used as a tag for the posts that are in that category and the tag added to the list of tags.
The Add Category section at the bottom of the page allows new categories to be added. The Category Name is for the name of the category that will be displayed around the site.
The category slug is usually left blank and will be automatically created by Wordpress.
The Category Parent allows a parent for the new category to be specified, placing the category in the hierarchy of categories. If one is specified the new category will appear below that category in the hierarchy. If one is not specified then it becomes a top level category.
The Category Description is optional, but provides some further details on the kinds of posts that will be posted to the new category.
Click Add Category to add the new category.
A notice appears that a new category has been added.
The new category appears at the end of the list of categories.
The category name is listed with any parent categories also listed in the name. The category will return to its normal order in the list after refreshing the page.
Click the edit button to edit the category.
The Edit Category page appears. The page allows editing of the details of a category. Change the name of the category in the Category name block.
The category slug is changed here, although it should usually be just left as-is.
Change the category parent.
Change the category description.
The Manage Category page appears again with a notice block that the category details have been changed.
The category and its changes now appear in the list with the rest of the categories.
