Import
When migrating a blog from one platform to another it is necessary to export the information, such as posts, pages and the comments on them to a file and then import them into the new installation. The default wordpress installation supports importing from many of the popular blogging hosts and blogging scripts.
Before attempting to import, make sure you have used the export utility of the old blogging software to export all the information to a file. Note that not all information can be imported and images cannot be imported using this method. From Wordpress, information about the uploads is imported, but the files must be downloaded seperately and uploaded to the new blog.
Go to Manage>>Import to begin the process.
To begin the import, click on the link for the current blogging platform that you use. We will cover a few of these.
The Convert Categories to Tags Import utility allows categories, often used in the same way as tagging by authors because of their ease of use, allows categories to be converted into tags.![]()
The category to tags conversion page is shown below.
Select the categories that are to be converted to tags.
NOTE: categories that are converted are converted and deleted. As stated on the page, no posts will be deleted, but if a parent category is converted, the child categories (if any) will be promoted to the level of the parent. This process cannot be reversed. When completed, a summary page shows what changes have been made.
Import from RSS allows posts to be imported from an RSS feed. This is very limited and usually just comments and the post can be imported.![]()
Save the RSS feed to your computer. Browse for it end click Upload File and Import to import the posts and comments onto your blog.
Ultimate Tag Warrior is an extremely popular plugin, allowing tagging of posts. This was one of the most popular plugins for implementing tags before Wordpress integrated them into the main source code. This plugin will allow those tags to be converted into Wordpress native tags. Click on the link.![]()
The main page appears.
Backup your database first, if anything goes wrong during this process (shouldn’t, but could) a database backup will save the day. Click on Step 1 >> to continue.
No UTW tags on this system, if there were, just keep following the steps.
Importing from Wordpress is the most functional of all the imports. Assuming that everything was exported from Wordpress, almost all database information could be imported through this method. Click on the Wordpress link to start the process.![]()
Browse for the file that you exported before. Click Upload File and Import to start the process. Everything that is updated is shown on a status page once completed.
